Frigidaire EFIC108 Review: Trusted Review by Technician in 2025

In the world of slow-improving ice makers, even the Frigidaire EFIC108 is considered at the moment, though I must actively advise my readers to take your attention in the Frigidaire EFIC121 or Frigidaire EFIC128 for an up-to-date ice making solution. Still, my today Frigidaire EFIC108 review will help anyone who comes across a deal for this ice maker to make up their minds.

In Ice Artisan, I only review the ice makers that I had used or repaired. So I can guarantee that:

  • I give you honest review (both pros and cons) of an ice maker. No hidden deal behind the website.
  • I share my technician’s point of view, so I focus not only on the performance, but also the build of an ice maker.
  • I compile an ice maker ranking list (coming soon) so you can compare all ice makers easily.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review

PROS

  • Stainless steel coating for the price
  • Usually go on sale

CONS

  • High energy consumption
  • Ice size adjustment setting not working
  • Lacks self-cleaning feature

Frigidaire jumps into the ice maker market quite soon, with the Frigidaire EFIC108 started in 2016. For a product that has almost 10 years in its product life cycle, and even the newest Frigidaire EFIC128 doesn’t completely replace it, well, it must be the benchmark of countertop ice makers.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review: Price

  • Available to buy now
  • Costs $119 in the U.S market
  • Amazon’s Choice

Brace yourself: you’re going to pay more for the Frigidaire EFIC108 than the Frigidaire EFIC128 due to its stainless steel upgrade. It will be the actual metal coating, not just a color disguise like the Frigidaire EFIC121, and it will cost a bit higher.

Even for an ice maker that launched 10 years ago, you still need to spend $119 for the Frigidaire EFIC108. Luckily, this Amazon’s Choice ice maker usually goes on sale, and you’re likely to grab one from Ice Artisan. It is never as affordable as the fully plastic-made ice makers from Frigidaire, but actually, the difference is negligible.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review

It’s likely to start dropping a lot more soon too, as there aren’t many dealers for this Frigidaire EFIC108 out there. You can also buy it secondhand from my deal, which decrease the price a lot, even more than the EFIC121. Well, I don’t mind buying used ice makers, and a steel body is also my favorite.

That said, if you’re planning to pay full price, you might want to consider the Igloo ICEB33 instead. It features a larger water tank, meaning fewer refills, and it’s a highly durable model from a trusted brand in the ice maker space.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review: Durability

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review: Design

  • Perhaps the most portable ice maker
  • Has a stainless steel finish
  • Multiple color options

The Frigidaire EFIC108 measures 12.3 x 8.7 x 12.5 inches, exactly like the Frigidaire EFIC121. While you can tell them apart when placed side by side, from a technician’s perspective, it’s clear that both ice makers likely come from the same factory. This approach makes it easier for the manufacturer to mass-produce a single OEM model and simply change the finish and branding.

On the scale, the Frigidaire EFIC108 weighs about 17.58 lbs, likely due to its metal coating. Still, it’s perhaps the most compact Frigidaire portable ice maker, making it easy to place in tight spaces like small kitchens or RVs.

Frigidaire still offers multiple color variations for the Frigidaire EFIC108, from silver, black, blue, red and white. Obviously, the Frigidaire EFIC108 is made during a time when ice maker companies were experimenting with color options, and we customers have a lot of choices to pick. Nowadays, newer models typically come only in black or gray, and if my Asian friend wants a red color to improve luck, well, he’s “out of luck” (pun intended).

The design style is fully used by Chinese ice makers at the moment, but the Frigidaire EFIC108 shows its outdated design with no handle and one-side ventilation, which limits placement options for the Frigidaire EFIC108. It’s deserved to get a minus from my ranking.

At least the Frigidaire EFIC108 still features the familiar top-mounted control panel. As much as I like the performance of the Igloo ICEB33, and I always mention the ice maker as the best portable ice maker for RV, I’m not a fan of its control board placement. Without gravity helping you, you have to hold the entire unit steady just to press the buttons. It’s a terrible design choice, and that’s one reason I appreciate the Frigidaire EFIC108—not making the same mistake.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review: Build

  • Frigidaire has better durability
  • Metal coating means better shock-resistant

The Frigidaire EFIC108 features a stainless steel finish, though the construction appears to be primarily plastic with a metallic coating rather than solid stainless steel. This is common in budget ice makers and helps keep costs down while maintaining an attractive appearance.

For an ice maker that’s been widely used for nearly 10 years, the Frigidaire EFIC108 has proven to be truly reliable. I’ve heard many users report using it daily for over three years, which is impressive for a Frigidaire countertop ice maker. That durability isn’t surprising—its metal coating likely contributes to better shock resistance, helping protect the unit from one of the main causes of failure.

One important factor in an ice maker’s durability is the availability of replacement parts—and in that regard, the Frigidaire EFIC108 stands out as a product from a former American brand. Most of its parts are readily available online, and scheduling Frigidaire service is simple. That’s a major convenience compared to dealing with an unknown, generic ice maker from China, where support and parts can be much harder to find.

Again, if you only want to spend $100 for an ice maker, Frigidaire should be the name you put your money on. The Frigidaire EFIC108 only stays in my workshop for 2 months, but I find its internal to be much likely the same as the Frigidaire EFIC121, which is still my daily driver at the moment.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review: Performance

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review: Capacity

  • Produces up to 26 lbs of ice daily
  • Internal storage: 1.5 lbs

On paper, the Frigidaire EFIC108 can produce up to 26 pounds of ice per day and hold approximately 1.5 pounds at a time. Keep in mind these numbers are approximate. The ice maker will signal “full” whenever something blocks its sensor, even if the bin isn’t completely full. In practice, the Frigidaire EFIC108 seems to have the same capacity as other budget models from Frigidaire, like the Frigidaire EFIC101, Frigidaire EFIC102 and new Frigidaire EFIC128.

However, because the Frigidaire EFIC108 costs a bit higher, we should expect for a better capacity. The same capacity as cheaper products means one minus point from my ranking, simple as that. At the same price, the Igloo ICEB33 can produce up to 33 pounds of ice consistently, thanks to its bigger water reservoir.

It takes us about 6-9 minutes to get the first new batch of ice, depending on the ice size and other environment conditions. You should read my article of “How long does an ice maker take to make ice?” to know which factors are delaying your ice making process.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review

For the first batch, the Frigidaire EFIC108 produces 9 bullet-shaped ice cubes—standard for most countertop ice makers today. You can expect it to take around 1.5 hours (more or less) to fill the ice basket completely. After that, you’ll need to unload the storage to allow the machine to start making the next batch.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review: Ice Quality

  • Bullet ice
  • A bit softer than fridge’s cube ices

Using the same compressor as newer model, I expect the Frigidaire EFIC108 to produce the same bullet-shaped ice cubes like other Frigidaire ice makers, with two selectable sizes. It is a bit softer than the typical ice cubes from your fridge, but it largely depends on the water quality.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review

About the ice size, I find the Frigidaire EFIC108 to have two size settings (small and large), but the difference between them is insignificant. Most of the time, you should select small size for a “small” decrease in ice making time.

If you want clear ices, you should look for a different ice maker, for example the Frigidaire EFIC103. I must warn you that is costly for your purpose.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review: Energy and Water Consumption

  • Normal water consumption
  • Higher energy consumption than today units

I wrote an article of “How much electricity does an ice maker use?” to give you a free calculator for ice maker’s energy consumption. The Frigidaire EFIC108 has a power consumption rating of average 200W, which is a bit not good for an ice maker of its caliber. To produce 100 pounds of ice, it is about 18.5 kWh, and if you try to run it 24/7, you would need to pay about $60 annually.

Of course, I never advise you to run your ice maker constantly. Read my article of “Can ice makers be left running all the time?” for a better insight.

Again, because the Frigidaire EFIC108 is making bullet ices, it would cost the same 12 gallons water to produce up to 100 lbs of ice. Read my article of “Does an ice maker use a lot of water?” if you’re doubting my calculation.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review: Noise Level

  • Quiet operation

The Frigidaire EFIC108 operates at about 41 decibels, which is normal for a Frigidaire ice maker, providing that we usually clean the ice maker. For context, 41 dB is comparable to a whisper or quiet rural area, and I must say that you won’t notice it’s operating.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review

For customer reviews, I find many most people agree that the ice maker is quiet, and for an ice maker that is bought by thousands of customers, it’s truly impressive.

Frigidaire EFIC108 Review: Features

  • Lacks self-cleaning feature
  • Add water alert, ice full notification
  • Adjusts ice size

Frigidaire is quite generous in making budget ice makers with full options. Though I don’t like the ice size adjustment in this Frigidaire EFIC108, it works quite well in the Frigidaire EFIC121 instead. If you’re buying a random Chinese OEM ice maker, chance is you don’t have this feature, because actually it’s the less used feature.

What you need in a Frigidaire portable ice maker is the automatic self-cleaning feature, which is lacking in this ice maker. Together with a simple drain plug, you can clean and maintain the Frigidaire EFIC108 better. It’s also the staple feature for a Frigidaire countertop ice maker, just like the add water alert and ice full notification. Of course, it doesn’t work perfect, for example it will require you to add water even when the tank isn’t fully empty, or when the sensor can’t detect ice full, making too much ice.

I know, errors happen, and because of the technicality in the current ice maker, not just the fault of only the Frigidaire EFIC108.

Verdict

The Frigidaire EFIC108 is a metal-coating ice maker that costs more than the base of the Frigidaire EFIC128. And that’s it, nothing more, it’s even worse with higher energy consumption.

Unless you’re buying a metal ice maker at that price range, I believe you should look for an alternative option to the Frigidaire EFIC108. It’s 2025, not 10 years ago.
