When Frigidaire announced the Frigidaire EFIC237, many of us hoping for a true countertop Scotsman experience, at less than 1/10 of the price. Instead of delivering a revolutionary nugget ice maker with cutting-edge features, we got a pioneer in making countertop nugget ice makers, together with the Frigidaire EFIC235.
While these improvements are welcome, it’s no secret that the nugget ice maker market is exploding, and great things like the Frigidaire EFIC255 happen for cheaper. Also, you can find portable countertop nugget ice makers like the Euhomy IM-16 or Euhomy IM-12.
So, at $349, the Frigidaire EFIC237 is very expensive, and it doesn’t offer the same nugget ice quality as the GE Profile Opal 2.0, so you can stop reading from here, and check my other recommendations instead. It’s never the problem of the Frigidaire EFIC237, but it’s superseded by better appliances.

Frigidaire has a well-deserved reputation for functional design, and the Frigidaire EFIC237’s industrial aesthetic continues this tradition. The black stainless steel finish provides an elegant look that feels comfortable in any kitchen setting. Undoubtedly, this is one of the very first countertop nugget ice maker in the world, and other brands keeps improving based on this design.
For instance, although the Frigidaire EFIC237 shares similar dimensions to competitors (9.8″ W x 16.9″ D x 19″ H), it’s been on a clever diet, with internal components arranged more efficiently. This makes the unit feel less bulky than its measurements suggest, though it comes at a price as certain components feel less robust.
The viewing window helps make the Frigidaire EFIC237 feel more premium than its price suggests. Unlike budget models whose ice levels remain a mystery, the transparent panel is clearly visible and genuinely useful.
It isn’t the same drawer style as the Frigidaire EFIC255, so you can’t take full ice out easily to put in an ice bag, one mistake that Frigidaire upgrades for their later units.

Like many modern appliances, the Frigidaire EFIC237 is a mix of metal and plastic, though this time the material choices reveal Frigidaire wants to make a steel countertop ice maker. As you can see, the Frigidaire EFIC237 is made mostly of stainless steel, which adds to its durability.
Though the Frigidaire EFIC237 is more expensive than current Frigidaire nugget ice makers, it’s worth the money you spent, thanks to the durability. I disassembled the whole appliance and find its compressor to be something really durable and high-quality, something different from modern units like the Frigidaire EFIC165.
The Frigidaire EFIC237 is still available on Amazon, and Amazon’s customer service remains the best you can find. You can add an extra protection plan if you want to be extra cautious.

Testing the Frigidaire EFIC237’s production claims revealed impressive results. The stated 44-pound daily capacity isn’t just marketing fluff – in my tests, it consistently achieved 43-45 pounds over 24-hour periods.
First ice appears at 15 minutes, which is the standard of Frigidaire nugget ice makers. The 3-pound bin fills completely in about 90 minutes, which proves useful when preparing for gatherings. It isn’t as good as modern Frigidaire nugget ice makers, and far from the Euhomy IM-12.

This is where opinions will diverge sharply. The Frigidaire EFIC237 produces nugget ice that’s notably firmer than premium competitors. Where GE Profile Opal 2.0 creates pillowy-soft nuggets, Frigidaire’s are decidedly crunchier.
The ice pieces measure roughly 0.5 inches with angular, irregular shapes rather than uniform cylinders. This creates more surface area for rapid cooling but less of that signature nugget texture some crave.
The taste remains neutral even after extended recycling, indicating good material choices in water-contact surfaces. No plastic flavors or mineral concentration developed during my testing period.

Power consumption sits firmly in “not great” territory. The 200-watt draw translates to meaningful electricity costs for regular users – roughly $17 monthly if run daily.
Water usage proves more reasonable thanks to the recycling system. Melted ice returns to the reservoir rather than draining away, reducing waste significantly compared to commercial-style units. Operating noise will polarize users. At 52-58 dB with peaks reaching 68 dB, it’s noticeably louder than premium competitors and significantly louder than your refrigerator. The Frigidaire EFIC237 is not a quiet ice maker, and if you don’t like a loud appliance making ice, you shouldn’t buy this Frigidaire countertop ice maker.
Some users report the sounds become background noise they stop noticing. Others find it perpetually annoying. Your tolerance for appliance noise will largely determine satisfaction here.

The self-cleaning cycle represents the standout feature. Running monthly with appropriate cleaners, it maintains internal hygiene with minimal effort. This automation proves especially valuable given nugget ice makers’ tendency to develop slime without regular maintenance.
Automatic overflow protection and restart-after-power-loss seem like basic requirements, but you’d be surprised how many budget models skip these safeguards. Their inclusion here shows Frigidaire’s experience in appliance design.

Verdict
You might argue that the Frigidaire EFIC237 is a solid nugget ice maker, but it remains pricey for the results it delivers. The Frigidaire EFIC255 is still the better choice, offering both greater durability and more attractive pricing.
